 Prayer

An overwhelming silence,
as if even the earth cannot utter a word--
not a whisper escaping the cavern of her mouth.
Fear a vampire's bite
and we have fallen to the midnight depths of isolation.

Will we remember who we were
before the final breath of freedom?
Will we remember the glorious sunlight
shining on children at play,
the sharp shadows thrown on busy streets,
lovers in fast cars losing control.

Will we return to the city of the living
where time once again has meaning?
Where the moon is the pearl of the sky
and not just the pale-faced watcher
of hungry and restless creatures
locked in the darkness of an uncertain fate.

Will we be transformed by the suffering
and heartbreak and mounting bodies?
Will we be reborn, know once again
the goodness we lost a lifetime ago?
Will we once again walk beneath a forgiving sun
and reignite the warmth of our souls?

An overwhelming silence
and a whispered prayer takes flight
from my lips--

Please let us sing once again.
